The Middle Rima Valley Irrigation Scheme (MRVIS), Goronyo, situated in Keta Village of Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State has been built over 30 years ago. It was design to irrigate approximately 5000ha of land.

The Goronyo Dam is one of the major dams under the jurisdiction of Sokoto-Rima River Basin Development Authority (SRRBDA). Built across River Rima, the Goronyo Dam is the key structure for the water resources and agricultural development of the Middle Rima Valley and second phase of the Sokoto and Rima River Basin Development Plan.

It is a multi-purpose storage dam storing about 942 million cubic metres of water for Irrigation and development of downstream areas from Goronyo to Argungu, covering an area of over 17,000 hectares. The Dam is located near Keta village in Goronyo Local government, and 90km North East of Sokoto City.

The Dam is designed to provide water for irrigation and development of downstream areas that is, the Middle Rima Valley and Zauro Polder project, covering over 17,000 hectares. The dam is also designed to provide an annual regulated flow of 425 million cubic metres to double the present rice cultivated madams from 40,000 to 80,000 hectares. The project also supplies 80 million cubic metres of water annually to Sokoto, Argungu and Birnin Kebbi Water Supply Schemes. The 200 Km2 Lake formed by the dam is expected to boost the fishing activities and tourism in the area. The dam have some safety issues which is being address by the TRIMING Project to bring it to international safety standard.
