Improving agricultural productivity through large scale irrigation
The Federal Government of Nigerian in an effort towards diversifying the economy and creating significant welfare improvement for the Nigerian citizen has embarked on a transformation agenda in the irrigation sector through the Transforming irrigation Management in Nigeria (TRIMING) Project. The development objective of the TRIMING project is to improve access to irrigation and drainage services, and to strengthen institutional arrangements for integrated water resources management and agriculture service delivery in selected large-scale public schemes in Northern Nigeria.
Having been given the overall responsibility for execution of the TRIMING project, the FMWR (Federal Ministry of Water Resources) has set up a Project Management Unit (PMU) staffed with highly competent multi-disciplinary experts fully dedicated to implementing the project, with a Project Steering Committee (PSC) who’s membership comprises Permanent Secretaries from various Ministries and key institutions at State level, as well as representatives of key stakeholders; Federal Ministry of Finance (FMF), Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET), Federal Ministry of Environment, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, and NGO representatives.
By support farmers in increasing their agricultural productivity through improvement of the water use efficiency, improved farm yield through crop intensity, and better access to market, the TRIMING project will help create job opportunities and also promote small and medium size local enterprise, thereby improving the economic base of the regions of intervention (with attention to youth and women development). This intervention will also include the establishment of Farm Management Centre to serve as a one-stop-shop in the provision of technical assistance to farmers and eligible beneficiaries in these areas. The center will minimize the cost of conducting business with farmers, improve farmers/WUA’s access to market opportunities.
